Historians do not rely on a single type of evidence but gather information from many different kinds of sources to build a reliable picture of the past. The chapter divides these broadly into literary/documentary sources and archaeological/material sources, and the following pages (Figures 1.2 to 1.9) give visual examples of each type. History writing draws on archaeological and literary traditions such as travelogues, memoirs, correspondence, genealogical records, folklore and oral traditions, and revenue documents. Archaeological sources include monuments, architectural structures, excavated sites, artefacts, objects, and art such as sculptures and paintings, often analysed using scientific instruments and laboratory testing.
