Dams can cause displacement, environmental damage and water conflicts. They flood homes, forests and fields. These issues can be solved by proper rehabilitation, environmental planning and sharing water fairly among all users.

  1. After a dam is built, several problems may arise. Villages may be submerged, displacing people. Forests and wildlife are lost. Silt builds up in reservoirs and downstream areas may receive less water. Water-sharing conflicts between states can also occur. Solutions include fair rehabilitation of displaced people, planting new forests, periodic desilting, maintaining environmental flow and transparent planning with affected communities involved in decision-making.
