What is the role of decomposers in the ecosystem?
Share
Decomposers act as cleansing agents of environment as they decompose the dead bodies and dead parts of plants and animals and clean the environment.
(i) Decomposers help in decomposing the dead bodies of plants and animals and
hence act as cleansing agents of the environment.
(ii) Decomposers also help in putting back the various elements of which dead plants and
animals are made, back into the soil, air and water for reuse by the producers like crop
plants.
(iii) They help in recycling of the nutrients.
(iv) They decompose dead remains thereby providing space for new life to settle in the
biosphere.
Decomposers feed on dead things: dead plant materials such as leaf litter and wood, animal carcasses, and faeces. They perform a valuable service as Earth’s cleanup crew. Without decomposers, dead leaves, dead insects, and dead animals would pile up everywhere.
Decomposers break down complex organic substances into simpler substances.Since decomposers help in decomposing dead plants and animals, they act as cleansing agents of the environment. Also, the decomposers recycle nutrients from dead plants and animals, and their waste back to the ecosystem.
Without decomposers, there would be a lot of dead plants and animals. Hence, the soil would lack nutrients plants need to grow and the entire ecosystem would break down.
The role of a decomposer in the ecosystem are:
1. They act as a cleansing agent of the environment by decomposing the dead plants
and animals.
2. They help in recycling the nutrients.
3. They provide space for new being in the biosphere by decomposing the dead.
4. They help in putting back the various elements into water, soil and air for the
reuse of producers like crop plants.
