  1. A comet is a small celestial body that consists primarily of ice, dust, and organic compounds. When it approaches the Sun, the heat causes its ice to vaporize, forming a glowing coma and a tail that points away from the Sun. In contrast, asteroids are made mostly of rock and metal and do not develop tails. They remain in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
