  1. Here, the word ‘tribute’ refers to a payment or offering made by one ruler or country to another—usually stronger—power to show loyalty, submission or dependence. The Portuguese demanded this tribute from Ullal to assert their control. Rani Abbakka, however, firmly rejected this demand, asserting that Ullal was a sovereign country and would not bow to foreign powers. Her refusal symbolised resistance to colonial dominance and her belief in her kingdom’s independence and honour.
