Fossils are the remains of organisms that once existed on earth. They represent the
ancestors of plants and animals that are alive today. They provide evidences of evolution
by revealing the characteristics of the past organism and the changes that have occurred
in these organisms to give rise to the present organisms.

The preserved remains of animals or plants or other organisms from the distant past are called fossils. These fossils tell us about many extinct animals and also give insights into how the evolution could have taken place.
Preserved traces of living organisms are called fossils. Fossils found closer to the surface of earth are more recent in origin than the fossils we find in deeper layers.
