Two solid spheres made of the same metal have weights 5920 g and 740 g. Determine the radius of the larger sphere, if the diameter of the smaller one is 5 cm.

  • 1

Since weight is proportional to volume, the volume ratio is 5920 / 740 = 8. Thus, the radius ratio is the cube root of 8, which is 2. The larger sphere’s radius is 2 × 2.5 = 5 cm.

  1. Because both solid spheres are made of the same metal, their weights are directly proportional to their volumes. The ratio of their volumes is V₁ / V₂ = 5920 / 740 = 8. Since volume is proportional to r³, the ratio of their radii is R / r = ∛8 = 2. The smaller sphere’s radius is 5 / 2 = 2.5 cm, so the larger sphere’s radius is 2 × 2.5 = 5 cm.
