The proportion of people below the poverty line in India is not the same for all social groups and economic categories. Factors such as caste, religion, occupation, education level, and geographical location contribute to these disparities. The government has implemented various poverty alleviation programs to address these inequalities and uplift the marginalized sections of society. However, sustained efforts and targeted interventions are necessary to achieve equitable economic growth and reduce poverty levels in India .
(i) Data suggests that some social groups and economic categories are more vulnerable than others in India.
(ii) Among the social groups, Schedule Tribes and Schedule Castes households are most vulnerable groups.
(iii) Similarly, among the economic groups, the most vulnerable groups are the rural agricultural labour households and the urban casual labour households.
(iv) The proportion of people below poverty line in these groups is much higher than the national average in India.
