Anna Chandy made history in 1937 as the first woman to be appointed as a Sessions Judge in India, serving in the state of Travancore. A trailblazer in the legal profession, Chandy’s appointment was a landmark moment for women’s empowerment and gender equality in India. Throughout her career, she demonstrated exceptional judicial acumen, fairness, and dedication to upholding the principles of justice. Despite facing numerous challenges and societal norms that discouraged women from pursuing careers in law, Chandy’s perseverance and determination paved the way for other women to enter the judiciary. Her pioneering role as the first woman Sessions Judge inspired generations of women to break barriers and pursue their aspirations in the legal field, leaving an enduring legacy of courage, resilience, and commitment to the cause of justice and equality.
