Suppose there is a rise in atmospheric temperature on Earth. How would this affect the cryosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere?

  • 1

Warming melts glaciers and sea ice in the cryosphere, raises sea levels and causes floods or droughts in the hydrosphere and triggers habitat destruction and species loss in the biosphere.

1 Answer

  1. (i) Cryosphere: Rising atmospheric temperatures accelerate the melting of polar ice caps and mountain glaciers, drastically shrinking snow-covered surfaces and lowering regional albedo. (ii) Hydrosphere: Meltwater influx causes sea-level rise that threatens coastal areas, alters ocean currents and intensifies weather extremes, driving heavy floods and severe droughts. (iii) Biosphere: Terrestrial and marine species suffer severe habitat loss, coral bleaching and disrupted food webs, threatening overall biodiversity.
