(i) Diamagnetic substances, when placed in a non-uniform magnetic field, tend to move from stronger region of the field to the weaker region. On the other hand, paramagnetic substances move from weaker region of the field to the stronger region.
(ii) When a bar of diamagnetic material is place in an external magnetic field, the field lines get concentrated inside the material and, hence, the magnetic field inside is slightly enhanced.

Two characteristic properties distinguishing paramagnetic and diamagnetic materials are:
(i) Diamagnetic substances move from stronger to weaker regions of a non-uniform magnetic field, whereas paramagnetic substances move from weaker to stronger regions.
(ii) When placed in an external magnetic field, diamagnetic materials expel magnetic field lines, weakening the field inside. In contrast, paramagnetic materials allow the field lines to concentrate, slightly enhancing the magnetic field inside.
