Plate movements cause earthquakes and volcanoes mainly along plate boundaries. At convergent boundaries, colliding plates produce earthquakes and volcanic activity. At divergent boundaries, magma rises to create new crust and volcanoes. At transform boundaries, plates slide past one another, causing frequent earthquakes. Therefore, the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes closely follows the movement and boundaries of tectonic plates.
