In a simple microscope a convex lens of focal length 5 cm is used. Calculate the magnifying power when the object is placed at the focus of the lens.

When object is placed at focus of microscope lens, its magnified image is formed at infinity and
magnifying power m = D/f = 25cm/5cm = 5.

  1. For a simple microscope, when the object is at the lens’s focus, the magnifying power (
    M) is given by:

    M = 1 + D/f
    where D = 25cm (near point) and f = 5 cm.
    M = 1 + 25/5 = 6
    Thus, the magnifying power is 6.
