If all flowers in a type of plant were only capable of self-pollination, how would it affect the genetic diversity over several generations? Explain.

Exclusive self-pollination severely diminishes genetic diversity across successive generations by endlessly recycling the same genes, limiting new character combinations and reducing the species ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

1 Answer

  1. If plants only self-pollinate, genetic diversity declines continuously over generations because offspring receive genes solely from the same individual plant. This eliminates gene flow between distinct plants, preventing novel combinations of traits. Consequently, beneficial variations cannot spread, harmful traits can accumulate and the population becomes less adaptable and highly vulnerable to environmental shifts or disease outbreaks.
