Under colonial rule, the postal network was designed primarily to serve British administrative machinery, trade requirements and governing outposts. Following independence, India Post fundamentally redefined its mandate into a nationwide public welfare service. It expanded from twenty-five thousand post offices in 1947 to over one hundred and fifty thousand, connecting every marginalized rural citizen to the mainstream mailing network.
