  1. An ecosystem is a community where living and non-living things interact. Plants make food, animals eat plants or other animals and microbes break down waste. Sunlight, air and water flow through this system, supporting life. Ecosystems recycle materials, clean water, regulate climate and help pollinate plants. All life depends on these processes. Healthy ecosystems ensure food, shelter and survival. Disrupting them can cause serious problems, so protecting ecosystems is vital for Earth’s sustainability and biodiversity.
