How do the Himalayas protect India from cold winds?

  • 1

The Himalayas act as a natural barrier, blocking icy winds from Central Asia. Without this mountain range, India’s northern plains would be much colder in winter. The Himalayas help maintain India’s subtropical climate by preventing cold desert winds from entering the subcontinent.

  1. The Himalayan mountain range forms a high, continuous wall along India’s northern border. It blocks the extremely cold winds from Central Asia’s deserts from entering India. These icy winds would otherwise drastically lower winter temperatures in the northern plains. As a result, the Himalayas help preserve the relatively milder subtropical climate of northern India. They also influence rainfall patterns by stopping monsoon winds, forcing them to rise and release precipitation, making them vital to India’s overall climate system.
