How can one decide if an object is in motion or at rest?

  • 1

To decide if an object is in motion or at rest, one must choose a reference point. If the object’s position changes relative to the reference point over time, it is in motion; if not, it is at rest.

Determining whether an object is in motion or at rest requires selecting a reference point. An object is considered to be in motion if its position changes with respect to that reference point over a period of time. For example, if you observe a car moving past a tree, the car is in motion relative to the tree. Conversely, if the object does not change its position relative to the reference point, it is at rest. This principle highlights that motion is always relative and depends on the observer’s frame of reference.
