How are mountain and valley breezes formed? Suppose there are two mountains, one covered with grass and another covered with barren rocks; would the temperature of the two mountain breezes be different? If so, how?

Uneven diurnal heating drives these breezes: daytime slope heating draws warm air up as valley breezes, whereas rapid nighttime cooling sends dense air down as mountain breezes. Barren rock slopes generate colder night breezes.

1 Answer

  1. (i) Breeze formation: Mountain slopes heat rapidly by day, causing warm air to rise and pulling cooler air upward as a valley breeze; at night, slopes radiate heat quickly, sending dense cold air downward as a mountain breeze. (ii) Temperature comparison: The barren rock mountain produces a significantly colder nighttime mountain breeze because barren rocks lose stored heat much faster than vegetated slopes.
