Compare the following fractions using : (a) 1/4 __ 3/4 (b) 3/5 __ 4/5 (c) 7/8 __ 3/8

(a) 1/4 < 3/4
(b) 3/5 < 4/5
(c) 7/8 > 3/8
The bigger numerator means the fraction is larger when denominators are the same.

  1. When denominators are equal, the fraction with the bigger numerator is greater. So, in (a) 1/4 < 3/4 because 3 pieces are more than 1 piece. In (b) 3/5 < 4/5 since 4 fifths are greater. In (c) 7/8 > 3/8 because 7 parts are more than 3 parts. Comparing fractions with same denominator is easy using this rule.
