Brahmagupta’s rules can be explained as follows: Adding positives moves right on the number line, adding negatives moves left, and adding opposite numbers cancels out. In Bela’s Building, pressing + moves up, while pressing – moves down.

  1. Brahmagupta’s rules can be visualized through Bela’s Building of Fun or a number line. Adding positive numbers (+) moves us to the right (upstairs in the lift), while adding negative numbers (–) moves us left (downstairs). Adding a positive and a negative number, such as +3 and –3, results in no movement, just like returning to the ground floor after going up and down the same number of floors. These rules provide a structure for operations involving integers.
