A sea breeze blows during the day because land heats up much faster than the ocean. As the warm air over the land rises, it creates a small area of low pressure. The cooler, heavier air over the sea then rushes in to fill that space. This creates a refreshing, cool wind that blows from the water toward the shore. ANSWER: (A) During the day

  1. The sea breeze is a perfect example of a local “thermal” wind. During daylight hours, the sun warms both the land and the sea. However, solid ground absorbs heat more quickly than deep water. The air touching the hot ground becomes warm and light, causing it to rise upward. Over the ocean, the air remains much cooler and more dense. Because nature always tries to balance pressure, the cool sea air moves inland to replace the rising warm air. This is why coastal areas often feel much cooler and more pleasant during a hot sunny afternoon.
