A rectangle is a four-sided polygon with opposite sides that are equal in length. It has four right angles (90 degrees). The longer sides are called length and the shorter ones are called width. A rectangle’s area is calculated by multiplying length and width and its perimeter by adding all sides.

In Class 6 Maths Chapter 8 Playing with Constructions students explore geometric constructions using a compass and ruler. They learn how to construct angles perpendicular bisectors angle bisectors and various polygons such as triangles and quadrilaterals. The chapter emphasizes the importance of accuracy in drawing and helps develop skills for solving geometric problems using basic construction methods.

  1. For a rectangle with side lengths L and W and diagonal d, the Pythagorean theorem gives:

      d² = L² + W²

    If one side (say, L) and the diagonal d are known, we can solve for the other side W as follows:

      W = √(d² − L²)

    This unique determination of W from L and d means that knowing one side and one diagonal is sufficient to construct the rectangle.
