They ordered the farmers of Champaran would cultivate indigo on 15% of their land and would give the money that came from it to the government as “rent”. Now Germany had started producing synthetic indigo, after which there was no need for natural indigo. When the British government stopped selling natural indigo and collecting rent, they asked for compensation from the farmers. With the advent of synthetic indigo, the work of natural indigo must have been greatly affected. Sharp decline must have come in the prices of natural one because when competition arises, prices fall.
