  1. (i) ‘It’ refers to the chirping and squeaking of the birds and animals in Mr Purcell’s shop.
    (ii) Mr Purcell could not hear ‘it’ clearly because of the monotonous ticking of a clock which he was used to hear every day. So, he paid no attention to anything else.
