  1. Agarwood forms only when the agar tree gets infected with a bug or fungus. Instead of dying, the tree reacts by producing a dark, aromatic resin called agar oil. This resin helps protect it from further harm. The infected part becomes agarwood, which is highly prized for its scent and used in perfumes, incense and carvings.
