  1. India is naturally separated from the rest of Asia by the massive Himalayan mountains to the north and large water bodies on the other sides—the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. These features serve as natural barriers, making India a well-defined geographic unit. The mountains prevent direct access, influencing trade and climate, while the seas facilitated maritime contact. These natural divisions have helped develop a distinct identity for India, often referred to as a subcontinent.
