No, reflex action is not the only function of the spinal cord. While it plays a crucial role in quick responses through reflex arcs, the spinal cord is also involved in transmitting information to the brain for more complex cognitive ...

Reflex arcs remain more efficient for quick responses even after the evolution of complex neuron networks because they bypass the time-consuming cognitive processes of the brain. This enables rapid reactions to stimuli, particularly in situations where immediate action is essential.

Connecting the nerves that detect heat to the nerves controlling muscle movement forms a reflex arc. This simplifies the response process, allowing for quick and automatic reactions to a heat stimulus without the need for conscious thought.

Reflex arcs have evolved in animals because the thinking process of the brain is not always fast enough for immediate responses. Many animals lack the complex neuron networks required for sophisticated thinking, making reflex arcs efficient mechanisms for quick reactions ...

Reflex arcs are commonly formed in the spinal cord, where nerves from various parts of the body converge on their way to the brain. This location is significant because it enables quick processing of sensory information and immediate motor responses.
