Benzenediazonium chloride is a colorless crystalline solid, readily soluble in water, stable in cold but reacts with water when warmed, and decomposes easily in the dry state. Benzenediazonium fluoroborate is water-insoluble and stable at room temperature.

Benzenediazonium chloride is prepared by the diazotization of aniline with nitrous acid at 273-278 K. Due to their instability, diazonium salts are not generally stored and are used immediately after preparation.

The diazonium group is N₂⁺. Arenediazonium ions formed by primary aromatic amines are stable for a short time in solution at low temperatures (273-278 K), and their stability is explained based on resonance.
