Tundra in polar regions has mosses, lichens, shrubs, etc., while the Himalaya, in the subtropics, is dominated by conifers. What could be the reason for this? What difference do you find in the animals found in these two regions? Which species are found only in the Himalaya? Discuss in class.

Polar tundra has permafrost preventing deep roots, allowing only mosses. The subtropical Himalayas have deeper, unfrozen soils supporting conifers. Tundra fauna include polar bears and reindeer; the Himalayas feature snow leopards, red pandas and Himalayan monals.
