At a panipuri (golgappa) stall, the concentration of spice in the pani (spiced water) was 8%. Many customers complained that it was too spicy. What quantity of regular water should be mixed into the 10 litres of pani so that the spice level is reduced to 3/4th of the original concentration?

The target concentration is 6% (three-fourths of 8%). The original 10 litres contain 0.8 litres of spice. Dividing 0.8 by 0.06 gives 13.33 litres total, requiring 3.33 litres (or 10/3 litres) of added water.

  1. The desired concentration is (3/4) × 8% = 6%. The original 10 litres contain 10 × 0.08 = 0.8 litres of pure spice. If x litres of regular water are added, the new concentration is 0.8/(10 + x) = 0.06. Solving this equation gives 0.06(10 + x) = 0.8, leading to 0.06x = 0.2, which means x = 20/6 = 3.33 litres (or 3 1/3 litres) of water must be added.
