CBSE 3-Language Rule: Will Hindi Become Compulsory Subject (July 1, 2026)?

  • 1

CBSE has made the three-language formula compulsory for Classes 9 and 10 from 2026–27 under NEP 2020. However, Hindi has not been made compulsory nationwide. Students must study at least two Indian languages, while schools can choose language combinations.

CBSE’s new three-language policy for 2026–27 requires Class 9 and 10 students to study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. Schools and students can still choose different Indian languages under the NEP 2020 framework. The third language will also not have a Class 10 board examination, reducing academic pressure on students. Under the updated framework, students studying in Class 9 will now be required to study three languages, referred to as R1, R2 and R3.
