A plant cell and an animal cell are of the same size. (i) Which cell will have a larger vacuole? Give reasons. (ii) What assumptions are you making to answer the question above?

(i) The plant cell will have a larger vacuole because vacuoles store cell sap and maintain turgidity.
(ii) The answer assumes both cells are mature, normal and healthy cells performing their usual biological functions under similar conditions.

  1. (i) A plant cell generally has a larger central vacuole than an animal cell. The vacuole stores cell sap, maintains turgor pressure and supports rigidity in plants. Animal cells usually contain smaller vacuoles.
    (ii) This answer assumes that both cells are mature, healthy and functioning normally. It also assumes they belong to typical plant and animal tissues under ordinary environmental conditions.
