  1. Parasites are organisms that depend on another living being, called the host, for food and survival. They live either inside the body or on the surface. Parasites harm the host by stealing nutrients and sometimes causing serious diseases. Examples are tapeworms in the intestine, lice on the scalp and protozoa causing malaria. Parasites spread through contaminated food, water or contact and can be prevented by maintaining hygiene and good sanitation.
