  1. The Moon’s phases are directly linked to its position relative to Earth and the Sun. When the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, we see the dark side—a new moon. As it moves, we see more of its lit part, leading to phases like crescent, half and full moon. The Sun always lights up half the Moon, but what we see changes based on viewing angle. This cycle affects tides, calendars and our night sky appearance.
